About the festival
Diwali Padwa is the fourth day of Diwali, on Kartik Shukla Pratipada. It's counted as one of the three and a half auspicious muhurats, so a good day to start something new, buy something or move house. It's also the day to remember King Bali, and for wives to do the aukshan for their husbands.

Traditions in Maharashtra
In many homes this is the couple's day. After the aukshan, the husband gives his wife a gift, called the padwa owalni. Some families draw a picture or symbol of King Bali and worship it. Some communities mark it as the new year and start buying and trading today.

The story of King Bali
King Bali was famous for his generosity. Vamana asked him for three steps of land. Bali gave it; Vamana covered the sky and the earth in two steps and placed the third on Bali's head.
Bali was sent to the underworld, but was granted the boon of visiting his people once a year. That is why he is remembered on this day.
