About Kaldarshi

Kaldarshi (कालदर्शी) is a Marathi calendar and Panchang for your phone. It answers the question you ask every morning: what matters today?

What it is

The calendar comes first and the Panchang second. You see the date, the tithi, the festivals and vrats that fall on it, and the times of sunrise, sunset and moonrise for your city. You can open any day for the full Panchang, search for a festival, and set reminders for vrats.

  • Works offline. The calendar is saved on your phone, so it needs no internet.
  • No yearly update. The next year arrives by itself. There is nothing to buy.
  • Free, with no account and no ads. What little the app counts is anonymous, and you can switch it off. See the privacy policy.
  • Marathi, English and Hindi. The language of the app and the language of the calendar can be chosen separately.

How the dates are worked out

Kaldarshi does not keep a table of dates. It calculates the position of the Sun and the Moon for the place you pick, and from that the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, with sidereal (Lahiri) positions and the amanta months used in Maharashtra. Festival and vrat rules are then applied on top, for example which day of a two-day tithi carries a festival. The results are checked against printed Marathi calendars.

Because everything is calculated, a place far from Maharashtra gets its own correct times and its own festival dates. Two cities can keep the same festival on different days, and the app shows each its own.

Who makes it

Kaldarshi is made by one person, as an independent app. If a date looks wrong or something is missing, please write to me.
