Gopalkala (Dahi Handi), in a little more detail

About the festival
Gopal means the one who looks after cows, and kala means mixing together. The whole festival is in the name.
The kala is the prasad: poha, lahya, curd, buttermilk, pickle and bits of fruit, all mixed up. Krishna loved it, they say.
The lesson: no one breaks the handi alone. Stand on each other's shoulders, and share whatever you get.

The butter thief and his friends
In Gokul young Krishna couldn't keep his hands off the butter. That's how he got the name Makhan Chor, the butter thief. So the milkmaids hung their pots of curd and butter up high, out of his reach.
But Krishna wasn't one to give up. His friends climbed on each other's shoulders into a human tower, and from the very top Krishna broke the pot.
Then they all sat down on the bank of the Yamuna. Everyone tipped the food they had brought into one heap, and they ate it together. That was the gopalkala.

In Maharashtra and beyond
In every lane a Dahi Handi is hung up high, full of milk, curd, butter, fruit and water. Govinda pathaks build tier upon tier, and a small child at the very top breaks the pot. Below, the crowd roars one thing: Ala re ala, Govinda ala!
In Mumbai, Thane and Pune hundreds of teams and thousands of people turn out, with big prizes at stake. Women's teams take part now too.
The Konkan has its Dahikala. Among the Varkaris, the wari itself ends with gopalkala, and the kirtan that closes a kirtan festival is called the kalyache kirtan, the kirtan of the kala.
In Gujarat, Dwarka has its own Makhan Handi.
How to keep Gopalkala
In short: Make the kala, offer it, share it; and if you go to a Dahi Handi, safety first.
- 1Soak the poha, and put the chana dal to soak a few hours ahead. The list of what you need is below.
- 2Mix the kala: poha, lahya, curd, buttermilk, pickle, the soaked dal, bits of fruit and a little sugar.Puffs of jowar or rice, pickle of lime or mango: every home's kala is a little different.
- 3Offer the kala to Krishna first. The first bite of the kala is for God.
- 4Then share it with everyone, out of one big bowl.In Krishna's kala everyone's food went into one heap; so does yours.
- 5Watching a Dahi Handi? Stay behind the barricades, well clear of the tower.Hold small children's hands, and protect their ears from the loud music.
- 6If you are in a govinda pathak, follow the rules your city sets.Age, the height of the handi, helmets, harnesses and mats below: govindas get hurt every year, which is why the rules exist. Practise before the day.
- 7Keep water and a first-aid kit at hand, and call for help at once if someone falls.Don't lift a fallen govinda's head or neck; wait for trained help.

Frequently asked questions
Can children climb the tower?
The courts and the state have set limits on age and on height. Follow the rules in force where you are, and ask the organisers.
Can I keep Gopalkala without a Dahi Handi?
Yes. The kala is the heart of the day: make it, offer it, and share it with your family and neighbours.
Is there a fast today too?
No. The fast was yesterday's, for Janmashtami. Today's kala is prasad to be shared and enjoyed.
How do we watch a Dahi Handi safely with children?
Stand at the edge of the crowd, behind the barricades, keep hold of the children, and agree a meeting point beforehand. Bring earplugs or cotton for little ears.
